A little background story about Alexis Von Bergen-Taylor from the San Juan Alumni Association 2022 Newsletter…

“A Pleasant Afternoon of Softball”, Dave Patterson ‘74, SJAA Vice President

It all started with a text from classmate Kevin Pendergast, that master of timing who usually hits me when I’m in a meeting, in the shower or trying to sleep. (Always great to hear from Kevin, anytime!) Once again, he was trying to organize a get-together of ’74 alumni and I had my marching orders…”Come join us at the softball game on April 27!” You can never go wrong if you just do as Kevin requests.

With the passing of a very dear classmate, Alexis Von Bergen-Taylor on November 28, 2020 after a long battle with ALS, many in the class of ’74 reached out to Kevin asking what could be done to honor her. Softball was Lex’s favorite sport and she excelled as both a pitcher and at 1st base. It was Kevin’s idea to fill a dire need for new uniforms for the San Juan’s girl’s softball team. He proposed that the new uniforms be designed with an LVB badge in softball shaped yellow to recognize Lex as the inspiration for the uniforms.

Many from the ’74 class responded and the uniforms were designed, manufactured and delivered to the team. 

On the afternoon of April 27th a few of us were able to attend the girl’s last game of the season. Classmates Kevin Pendergast, Breck Spain, Bev Ratzlaff, Sandy Sisler-McMahon, Denise Cutigni-Crayton, Ronda Hitchcock and myself had the honor of observing the team playing in the “Lex Unies”, reminisce about the intensely funny and wonderful human being our friend was and traded stories about our experiences with her. We also assessed the facility the girls were using compared to the field the boys were playing on next door and came to the conclusion that more needs to be done to help. Lex’s story continues…
