Class of 1963 – Judy Ann Bullard Townsend – On the morning of May 4th, 2016 at approximately 12:30 in the morning Judy passed away at UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, Ca. as a result of injuries received in an automobile accident late the previous evening. Judy was in a comatose state and did not regain consciousness before succumbing to her injuries. She was returning from her favorite activity, participating in a card tournament in the Jackson Rancheria Casino. Judy was born in Cleburne Texas on November 19th, 1945. She was the third child of Mary and Leonard Bullard. Judy was preceded in death by both her parents and Roger G. Townsend, her husband and love of her life. Judy and Roger will be reunited by sharing a niche in the columbarium at East Lawn Memorial Park & Mortuary in Elk Grove, California. Judy is survived by her son Greg Parker, daughters Meshell Parker & Diane Simshauser, and her siblings Cynthia Blair & Carolyn Bullard. Judy grew up and lived for the most part in the Sacramento County region. She was a dedicated parent during sometimes difficult periods. She weathered life as a single mother and managed through two rocky marriages. She worked multiple jobs while raising two adventurous children who found multiple ways to challenge her. That is until she met, and ultimately married, the love of her life, Roger. Judy and Roger had a story book romance and united their two fractured families into a solid family unit. Judy opened her heart to Roger’s children Sarah and James and brought them into her life. The ultimate expression of Judy & Roger’s love was the birth of Judy’s third child, Diane Marie. Like all families they had their challenges but never was Judy happier than in her life with Roger. At the end of her life, Judy’s pride consisted of five loving children, twelve loving grandchildren and eight loving great grandchildren.
Judy was an avid reader of romance novels and during a particularly steamy passage she would toss her book down and slap her legs with a jaunty rhythm, clap her hands, and snap her fingers in a jubilant expression of excitement. Witnessing this always brought a smile to everyone in the room. Judy’s other great passion was card games and gambling. The challenge of gaming kept her mind sharp and her wit keen. It also afforded her with social congress and a pleasant social life. Judy often traveled on cruise ships and enjoyed taking train trips with her siblings. As, a young woman, Judy loved to swim and spend time at a river or ocean front. This might have derived from her youth, doing gymnastics on Muscle Beach with her family. She was an accomplished gymnast and dancer as a young lady as were both of her sisters. It is with a heavy heart and a sincere feeling of love and loss that we say farewell to this wonderful parent, friend, confidant, mentor, and spirited individual. We thank her for her care and comfort over the years. Thanks to her wisdom and advice we have the courage to carry on with a part of her in our hearts and minds. The occasional tear is a symbol of a life and memory dear to us and a reminder of her tender loving spirit.
